We use cookies to keep the site running, understand how visitors use it, deliver content you have opted into, and track affiliate referrals so we can earn the commissions that fund the site. We do not use cookies for cross-site behavioral advertising. We do not sell cookie-derived data to third parties.
For broader context on what data we collect and how we use it, see our Privacy Policy. This Cookie Policy focuses specifically on the cookie technology itself.

4. Specific cookies set by third-party services
The third-party services we use set their own cookies under their own privacy and cookie policies. Specific cookie names and durations are determined by each service and may change at the service’s discretion. The summary below describes the general purpose and typical duration; for authoritative detail, follow the linked policy for each service.
For the full list of third-party services and the data they collect, see Section 2 of our Privacy Policy.
Hosting and session
Vercel — short-lived session cookies required for the site to load and serve pages correctly. Typically expire when you close your browser.
Analytics
Google Analytics (via GTM), Clicky Analytics, and Hotjar — set persistent cookies that distinguish unique visitors, track session duration, and aggregate page-view patterns. Typical durations range from one day for session identifiers to up to two years for unique-visitor identifiers. Hotjar additionally records aggregated behavior such as scroll depth and click patterns to produce heatmaps.
Email and subscriber tracking
MailerLite — sets cookies when you interact with our subscription forms or email content. These cookies help associate your activity with your subscription record so we can deliver relevant content. Typical duration: one year, or until you unsubscribe.
Affiliate / commission tracking
Amazon Associates, ClickBank, and My Patriot Supply — set cookies when you click an affiliate link from this site to a merchant site. The cookie identifies us as the referring source so we receive commission on qualifying purchases. Typical duration ranges from 24 hours (Amazon’s standard cookie) to 60 or 90 days depending on the merchant.
Embedded media
YouTube (Google) — when you play an embedded YouTube video, Google sets cookies per its own policy. We use privacy-enhanced embed mode where the embed code supports it, which limits what data is set before you actively engage with the player.
5. How long cookies last
Cookies fall into two general lifespan categories:
- —Session cookies are deleted when you close your browser. Used for navigation, security, and short-lived state.
- —Persistent cookies remain on your device for a defined period — anywhere from a few days to two years depending on the cookie’s purpose. Analytics, affiliate tracking, and email subscriber cookies are typically persistent.
You can delete persistent cookies at any time through your browser settings. Doing so will cause services that depend on them — such as analytics opt-out preferences — to be reset the next time you visit a site that uses those services.
6. How to control cookies
You have several options for controlling cookies. The most thorough is browser-level control, which applies across every site you visit. Service-specific opt-outs disable particular tracking services regardless of which site uses them.
Browser settings (applies to all sites)
Every modern browser lets you view, delete, and block cookies. The exact location of these controls varies by browser:
You can also enable private browsing or incognito mode, which limits cookie persistence between sessions, or use browser features that automatically clear cookies when you close the browser.
Service-specific opt-outs
For analytics services and ad networks, you can opt out without changing browser settings:
Google Analytics
Google provides a browser add-on that opts you out of Google Analytics across all sites that use it.
Hotjar
Hotjar provides a one-click opt-out that prevents Hotjar from collecting data on any site that uses it.
Network Advertising Initiative
Industry-wide opt-out that covers many advertising and analytics networks at once.
Digital Advertising Alliance
Another industry-wide opt-out covering participating ad and analytics networks.
Effect of disabling cookies
You can disable any non-essential cookies without losing access to the content on this site. You will still be able to read articles, browse pillar guides, and use most features. However:
- —Some interactive tools (calculators, embedded widgets) may not retain your inputs between sessions.
- —Embedded videos may not load if you have blocked third-party cookies entirely.
- —Email signup forms may not remember if you have already subscribed.
- —Affiliate referral attribution will not work if you block tracking cookies, but this does not affect your ability to purchase recommended products at the same price.
7. Do Not Track
Some browsers offer a “Do Not Track” (DNT) signal that asks websites not to track your browsing behavior. We currently do not respond to DNT signals because no consensus has been established on what compliance with DNT requires. You can manage tracking preferences directly through your browser settings and through the service-specific opt-outs described in Section 6.
8. Changes to this policy and contact
We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time as the services we use evolve, as new cookies are added, or as legal requirements change. When material changes are made, we will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. Continued use of the site after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
